From Hoggin to Froggin
Video Review
by Sheila Ogle
- Crowbar and Jason Russell, cousins from the Ozark Mountains of northern Arkansas
, bring hands-on instructions and excellent fishing tips for the everyday angler in their newest video release ‘ From Hoggin to Froggin‘ filmed and produced by Ozark Outdoors. The lush Arkansas woods and swamps are the setting for their many fishing adventures in rapid waters and from trees overhanging still riverways. At one point in this video there is a "Tarzan feel" as Jason dives from a large branch into the water for a closer look at the fish he is in pursuit of. Footage of one of the least understood fishing methods opens this adventure with a splash by splash account of arm wrestling 'cat after cat' from underwater nests.
- As I watched this video, I admit I found myself wondering, ‘ What are they thinking?‘ each time they dove beneath the dark waters to lure a channel or flathead out using a bare fist for bait. When I posed this question to Crowbar Russell he said
, "When you put your hand underwater and find a catfish with a mouth as big around as your head and he bites down- the fight is on; it’s just the thrill of it!" Then showing the scars from a blue cat, he explained that they have rows of teeth and that they can ‘...tear you up’.
- The smallest detail... like how to rig froggin’ setups without a weight so that frogs will be attracted to the floating plastic worm, are included in the froggin’ section. Who knew? Entertaining antics and good-natured fun are seasoned throughout this 77-minute video. The family traditions of fishing and hunting are also shown in the numerous other videos available from Ozark Outdoors. The anglers, hunters, musicians and filming talents in the videos are shared by family and friends.
- They also do a great job showing the truth that every day is not a catching day but every day is a fishing day. Down-to-earth fishing videos are appealing since many of us are the everyday variety of angler who enjoys wading in the river and can relate with trolling in a flat bottom boat for the hot spots on the rivers and lakes that is one of the reasons my family likes this video.
- I have to agree with a comment that Crowbar made about not having to have expensive equipment to go fishing. While that might be well and fine for some the whole idea is to go have fun with family and friends. "Sitting on the bank or fishing from the bridge, is what you will see in some of the other videos. That’s why we use a flat-bottom boat because that’s what most people like to use on the smaller rivers." By golly, I think Crowbar has something there! I’ll let you decide from the video whether or not that flat-bottom boat had fish in it at the end of the day . . .
