A FLY GUY GUIDE REVIEW

WOW! and TRIPLE WOW!!!

A review of fly fishing guide Capt. Sodie in a nutshell or the Readers Digest version of a fantastic carp guide?

Paul Sodamann, Capt. “Sodie” guides for carp, cats and all the salt species of the Florida coast out of a Mitzi Skiff flats boat. I’d known Paul for several years as a Federation of Fly Fishers Conclave friend but we had not fished together until this fall. We are both professional fly fishing guides, FFF Certified Casting Instructors and we both love warm water fly fishing; that bond created a unity that secured a successful day whether we caught fish or not.

Deep in the Flint Hills of a stormy Kansas Saturday morning, Paul and I headed for Tuttle Lake or as Paul called it “Tuttle Puddle”, a small body of water outside Manhattan. We were both fit and agile for “mature” adults so when we stopped to rig rods and unload the boat, we were ready in record time. The clouds had cleared and left us with a beautiful but windy day. He tied surface and subsurface flies on two of his rods and two of mine, then secured them to the interior side of the flats skiff on rod foam lined rod racks. Paul instructed me to stand in the middle of the casting deck in the front of the boat and he took the elevated poling platform in the back.

What a sight! There in the middle of Kansas was a flats skiff being poled by a Master Certified Casting instructor on the muddy brown Tuttle “Puddle”. I expected to see a person snow skiing on the water next us too, it was so unusual - I loved it! The idea of poling for carp was ingenious. Paul skillfully maneuvered the vessel along the “Puddle” banks while I cast placing the fly as close to the shoreline as possible. I cast at tails and little gaping mouths sipping the surface without much luck when my guide suddenly spoke up and said he had a special place to take me where he knew I would catch a carp. He pulled the pole in, fired up the motor and off we flew.

Now if you think I’m going to reveal a fly fishing guide’s special place….you are wrong. I will tell you that once we arrived I saw so many carp backs sticking out of the water I knew the game was on. I tossed a little woolly worm into the throng of prehistoric like creatures and BAM! my rod was doubled over and the song we fly fishers love to hear was in full chorus….ZING!, ZING!, ZING! sang my reel as the green weight forward floating fly line raced off the reel. Laughing, I turned to Paul and yelled, “I’m down to the backing!” It was reel and run with echoes of our laughter when Mr. Carp finally gave up. Paul weighed him in at 6 pounds but that was just the beginning.

I caught several more with the same super exciting action and every fish brought a “Pentax moment”. I couldn’t stand it and insisted the Captain show me how a real pro brings them in. He was off the platform in a wink, anchored the skiff and had one on before I knew it! His reeling technique was different than mine, I noticed he had a zig zag method that brought the monster in fast. We were using 6 and 7 weight Temple Fork and Loomis rods that doubled over from the heavy pull of what I called “the cows of warm water”. The rods stood the test and proved strong as booth of us began bringing carp in the 5 to 8 pound range.

Capt. Sodie is a professional to the Nth degree, a pleasure to fish with, a total gentleman, sharp, smart and articulate with a relaxing bit of humor that brightened an already spectacular day. All the gear was immaculately clean and high quality. I can, beyond a shadow of a doubt endorse and recommend Capt. Sodie for a day of carp heaven in Kansas. Now I can’t wait to fish the Florida flats with him!
