Scientific name:

Aplodinotus grunniens

Also known as : Drum fish, grunter, gaspergou, gou, sheepshead .
The drum doesn't "run" like other sport fish, but it will DEFINITELY put your reel and rod to the test.
Live Bait and the Jiggin' Spoon work great for these fish.
Arkansas State record: 45 lbs. 6 oz.

Iowa: 46 lbs.

Habitat: deep pools of rivers with clear water and clean bottoms.
Spawning period: April-May laying 100,000-500,000 eggs
typical foods: Snails, mollusks, crayfish, aquatic insects and small fishes
Native Americans called it the buffalofish because it grunts like a buffalo . This sound is made only by breeding males. The drumming sound comes from muscles against the swim bladder.

A unique skeletal feature of the drum are the ear bones known as otoliths. These are large and round with an "L" on one of the flattened sides. People collect them and consider them as "lucky stones." These otoliths have been found at prehistoric Indian sites used perhaps for good luck charms or as decorations to prevent sickness.
