Johany DeMarco

Greetings to all of you warrior-women! You don’t know how thrilled and excited I am to be a part of “Women Anglers and Hunters Too” as a writer. It really is an honor. I really hope (fingers crossed) that you enjoy all of my articles as much as I enjoy writing them!

So where do I begin? Let’s see…

I grew up in Southwestern CT. Just like a lot of you I was exposed to the outdoors from an early age. (Thanks Mom and Dad!)

I did your typical outdoor stuff. You know, hiking, camping, and some fishing out in the ocean. But unfortunately, no hunting. My family was not big on hunting at all. They just didn’t grow up with it. It wasn’t their thing.

The weird thing is, ever since I could remember, I have always been passionate about legends and stories of warrior-women from ancient times. Yup, the Amazons of Ancient Greek Mythology were right up there. (Boy, did I research that topic!)

I was fascinated with the fact that these women were skilled and fearless warriors. These women were hunters. They were trained to use a whole variety of weapons for combat. And one of the main weapons they used in combat and hunting was, you guessed it, the bow and arrows.

I have always felt such a strong affinity for these women and how they stood up against the patriarchal societies that deemed women unworthy and inferior to them.

These women were no joke. And these men knew it! They thought of these women as an abomination because they rode horses like men. Because they fought even better than them in combat. Because they used their bow and arrows with deadly accuracy. And because they would never cower down to anyone and anything.

And I bet you anything that these women were some of the meanest anglers around!

I decided right then and there that I wanted to be an Amazon.

Years later, I realized I didn’t need to be an Amazon. I have always been an Amazon. Every woman out there is an Amazon. A warrior. A huntress. An angler. It’s who we are. It is our birthright. Nothing and no one can change that.

So I got my 1st bow and some arrows. And I learned how to shoot the weapon of our ancestors. The weapon of the warrior-women of ancient times.

Lucky for me I lived down the street from 3 brothers around my age who were bow hunters. They taught my sister and I how to shoot. We had the best time target practicing in their backyard everyday after school. I’m glad to say, my sister is married to one of them.

And although my sister and I have NEVER hunted before, (you can gasp now), we will get ourselves a deer one day. I can promise you that!

I am also married to the best guy in the world. Is he an outdoors kind of guy? No, not really. He never grew up doing the outdoor activities that a lot of you women did growing up.

His idea of hiking is from the parking lot of a tailgating party to the New York Giants Football Stadium. Camping is staying at a hotel. I give him credit for doing some saltwater fishing when he was young with his brothers. But hunting? Never!

He’s actually quite baffled that I’m even thinking of hunting and especially of fishing more often. There are so many other things that I can do and I’m choosing hunting and fishing? Why?

He might not understand all of my reasons for wanting to go hunting and fishing, but he supports every one of my decisions. Maybe later on when I’m better settled in I can try to persuade him into the dark side!

He always says how he will NEVER EVER eat venison? Well, we’ll just have to see about that, now won’t we! He won’t even know the difference when I sneak it in his beef stew.

“Babe, you really outdid yourself with dinner tonight. It tastes amazing!” he would say.

Then I would answer with and evil grin plastered on my face, “Nothing like some deer stew to make you feel all nice and warm inside, huh?”

And lastly, my husband and I are the proud parents of an only child. And guess what? He absolutely adores the outdoors. (Thanks to me, of course!)

We do a whole bunch of outdoor stuff together. We also go hiking a lot. He literally begs me to go hiking. Sometimes I’m so exhausted by the end of the day that I say to him “Take a hike!” (Nicely of course.)

From a very early age he’s been fascinated with everything in nature. He’s always collecting the latest rocks and bugs that pop up out of nowhere in our yard. The fact that he likes to pick up fat ugly grubs off the dirt and play with anything creepy and crawly is beyond me! But I encourage it. I know that’s how kids like to explore the world around them.

My husband and I even took our son camping for the very first time last summer. He absolutely loved it. We tried to even make our own fire. And believe it or not, even my husband had a jolly old time. He already planned this years camping trip! Soon, he’ll be hunting and fishing in no time! (Wink, wink.)

Well, I think this is more than enough blabbing for one day. Thank you again for giving me the opportunity to write for such an incredible website filled with extraordinary women (and men).

So for all of you warrior-women out there. Keep living in the traditions of your ancient foremothers. Keep their ways alive and strong. For the blood and strength of your warrior-women ancestors curses through your veins. Enjoy the great outdoors. And keep on hunting and angling!
