Larry ‘The Cable Guy’ Meets Mr. Redfish
Capt. David Rogers
I would have to say that a recent charter was the most entertaining day I have ever spent on the water. I was joined by my good friend Greg Batten and his good friend ‘Larry the Cable Guy’. It was Larry’s first time fishing for redfish. I must say I was impressed by his angling skills. Larry caught some real nice redfish as did Greg.
The day started early as we picked Larry up at 4:30 and headed to the Mosquito Lagoon. The ride over was pretty funny as we talked about many things and Larry always had a one liner. His comic genius is incredible.
We made the usual stop at Skeeter Lagoon’s Bait and Tackle for some mullet and shrimp. Larry made himself right at home when he found Rich’s (owner of Skeeter’s) guitar in the corner. He began to make up some crazy songs and entertained people at 5:30 in the morning. After a few laughs we loaded the boat and headed to the water.
It was a beautiful day as we glided across the water to our first stop. We had not been there very long before Larry had his first redfish. That was the start to a fun day of fishing. The first fish was one inch over the slot and we had to release him. Larry said “Dave I ain’t never had to throw one back for being too big.”
Moments later Greg hooked into a nice fish and another came to the boat. Then Larry popped another one and this one was in the slot and went in the cooler. We caught several fish before the school we were on decided to move and so did we.

The next stop was redfish heaven as we found well over 100 fish tailing on the flats and really happy. We fished these fish for about two hours and managed to land a 13 pound fish. There were many much larger but they were not eating. I was hoping to get Larry a “Slobberknocker’ but they would have nothing to do with us. I really did not want to spoil Larry on his first redfish trip.
Larry did a few of his stand up routines for me as I mentioned them. I love his NASCAR analogies. His Monopoly money jokes are great as are all the ones I have heard. He had plenty of new stuff that I had never heard.
We left the lagoon and headed to the Indian River Lagoon for some trout. Greg got a few trout on top water and that was before the rain began to fall. We decided to take it to the dock.
On the way back we made a pit stop at Louis’s BBQ in Mims. We found a table and for about ten minutes Larry went undetected. Once his cover was blown it was autograph time. I think the people at the restaurant must have called all their relatives. It was cool. Dan signed shirts hats and took photos.
I stopped by Louis’s the next week and the photos were everywhere. Larry is small town America or the big city. He just makes people laugh and blends in as one of us.
‘Larry the Cable Guy’ is one of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet. He and Greg together made for a fun filled day. Larry is also a very down to earth guy and what you see is what you get. He is very appreciative of his fans and enjoys people. His humor is non-stop and he is just good people.
Check out his DVD ‘Witless Protection’ and if you ever get a chance to see him in person I promise you will laugh so hard you will think you broke a rib.
Check out his website www.larrythecableguy.com for upcoming dates. I know he has some dates in Florida. Go check it out!
Thanks for a fun day Larry and keep up the awesome work!
Tight Lines and Good fishing!
