Legends and Legacies
Leisa Griffin

Webster’s Dictionary defines a legend as “a notable person whose deeds or exploits are much talked about in his or her own time" and legacy as “anything handed down from, or as from an ancestor” .

Legacies and legends are just a couple of the many words that can be used to describe the dynamic people who inspire and encourage the future outdoors men and women. From Davy Crockett to Crockett Mathis and from Hank Parker to sons, Hank Jr. and Billy; unforgettable stories and memorable moments impacting the history of those who have passed, those of the present and never forgetting those of our future. Shared stories about the terrific trophies, missed shots, the greatest catch and the one that got away are just a few of the many things passed down through the generations.

The “Legends of the Outdoors” honors incredible men and women who have greatly contributed to and surpassed expectations in the outdoor world. Legends founder Garry Mason wanted a place to pay tribute to these extraordinary contributors of the outdoor world when he founded the “Legends of the Outdoors” National Hall of Fame in 2002. Since 2002 several people have been recognized for all that they do and the integral part they have played in the outdoor industry.

As their friends and families proudly watched; Chris Houston, Jack Oliver, Preston Pittman, Wally Marshall, Jimmy Houston, Tom Knapp, George Cochran and Jerry Martin were inducted on August 29, 2008 into the “Legends of the Outdoors” Hall of Fame. These amazing men and woman joined the other remarkable individuals who have shown their dedication for the outdoors such as Bill Dance, Brenda Valentine, Soc Clay, Penny Berryman, Harold Ensley, Forrest Wood and Alex Rutledge as well as many others in the Hall of Fame.

With 2004 inductee, Shaw Grigsby and 2006 inductee, Hank Parker as guest speakers for the event; light hearted humor and fun combined with honor and pride as the inductees from the past and present shared stories about themselves and others. It was extremely apparent how each individual was touched and honored by this prestigious moment in their lives. Tears of laughter and tears of joy joined together in an abundance of emotions from this once in a lifetime experience.

Kevin Blake Weldon, Lisa Snuggs and Rick Revel kept the crowd entertained with their amazing performances. Kevin sang songs from his new Hold On CD along with some of his hilarious BadBob and Jimmy comedic songs. Lisa also kept the crowd’s attention as she entertained those attending with singing and Rick portrayed Davy Crockett in a first-person performance and story of Mr. Crockett’s life. Each entertainer did an amazing job and gave a phenomenal performance.

I was one of almost four hundred people privileged to sit in the crowd and be a part of this exciting and memorable event. I was able to meet and visit with many people one-on-one. I stood next to Preston Pittman as he did one of his famous gobble calls, got my photo taken with Jerry Martin, Alex Rutledge and Brenda Valentine as well as many others and immensely enjoyed this wonderful opportunity.

Legacies and Legends joined together for this unforgettable night. These incredible men and women have influenced the lives of so many others. They strive to pass on their love for what they do; teaching and impacting the heritage and future of tomorrow. The legacy will continue and the legends will grow as more generations go by.
