The Warrior Spirit
The Hero
Jo DeMarco

In a faraway land a long time ago,
a knight rode to a castle.
This knight was strong, brave and powerful
but no ordinary knight.
The knight was a hero, a living legend cheered
on by people everywhere.
The king and queen of the castle praised the knight for such
heroic accomplishments.
From winning sword fights to defeating the enemy in battle,
the knight truly amazed everyone.
Even more amazing than all this is the fact that this great knight was a woman.

By Andrea Dean, Columbia, Mo.

Pretty remarkable, isn’t it? That a single woman could do all of these things. Doesn’t it make you want to shout, “Take that ye men! Hah! We’ll see who can catch the biggest fish and buck now. Bring it on!”

There is one thing that bonds all women together. This thing lies in the blood of every woman. In some women, it lies dormant.

But in others, when this thing begins to awaken, you will know. You’ll begin to crave. You’ll begin to hunger for something that is missing in your life. At first you can’t seem to understand or find what it is you’re hungering for. You begin to search endlessly to find what is missing, to feed that hunger, that craving.

And when you feel you’re at your wits end, ready to give up, that’s when it hits you. And it hits you hard. And when it does it forever transforms your life. Changes your very essence. Your very being.

It is then that you become aware of who you really are. You realize the blood that flows through your veins is ancient. The ways of your foremothers begin to come alive within your soul. These are the ways of the Warrior Women. The ways of the Warrior Spirit.

Every time you pick up your bow and arrow…

Every time you cast out your rod…

Every time you hunt…

Every time you find yourself alone in the midst of nature you are keeping the traditions and the ways of your foremothers and their warrior spirit alive.

Now you know who you are. You are strong. You are powerful. You’re a Hunter. An Angler. A Warrior. A Woman! It is your birthright. Your path. Your life.

Where is the antique glory now become,
That whilom wont in women to appear?
Where be the brave achievements done by some?
Where be the battle, where the shield and spear,
And all the conquests which them high did rear,
That matter made for famous poets’s verse
And boastful men so oft abashed to hear?
Been they all dead, and laid in doleful hearse?
Or do they only sleep and shall again arise?

-Edmund Spenser

Who are these ancient foremothers? Who are these warrior women of your past?
